Moroski won’t seek fourth term as Ashtabula County commissioner

JEFFERSON — Ashtabula County Commissioner Joe Moroski announced Wednesday, he will not seek a fourth term.

He plans to serve out the duration of his term, which will expire Dec. 31, but will not throw his hat in the ring for another four-year term, he said.

“My wife and I had a lot of time to talk over the holidays,” Moroski said. “We’ve been doing some traveling and are at a point in our lives where we want to be able to spend more time together.”

Moroski said his wife, Encie, retired 10 years ago after teaching school for more than 30 years.

Moroski was elected to the Board of Commissioners in November 2002. He said the board has accomplished a lot throughout his time in office.

“I think we changed the direction of government,” he said. “When I got here we were building the Lodge and taking on more debt.”

Moroski said the board has done a lot to ensure the county runs more efficiently in terms of technology.

“I think we learned to do what the average person does at home,” he said. “We learned to do a little bit more with a little bit less.”

Moroski said several years ago, the county was operating on a $24 million budget. Today, it is operating at right around $19 million to $20 million.

“(The county) is running more like a business than it has before,” he said. “Although the office is smaller (in terms of staff), the staff we have is a highly qualified team. We provide the leadership, but a lot of the credit goes to (the staff).”

Moroski currently sits on the Ashtabula County Planning Commission; Ashtabula County Port Authority; Solid Waste Board of Directors; the Ashtabula County Growth Corporation (Community Improvement Corp. - CIC); Eastgate Council of Governments; and, is a Growth Partnership Trustee.

Moroski also sits on the Health Advisory Council; Tax Incentive Review Board; Records Commission; JOED (Joint Office of Economic Development)/NEOTEC (Northeast Ohio Trade and Economic Consortium) Board; Western Reserve Resource Conservation and Development; Community Corrections Planning; Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC); and, CEBCO (County Employee Benefits Consortium of Ohio) Board.

He is chairman of the Airport Zoning Board; chair of the Solid Waste Policy Advisory Committee; board member and audit committee member for the County Commissioners Association of Ohio (CCAO); prosecutors-commissioners liaison committee member for CCAO; state auditor for the Northeast Ohio Regional Advisory Board; advisory board member of the Ohio Department of Veteran Services; member of the Scenic River Advisory Council for Conneaut Creek; and, an alternate on the county’s 911 Board.

Moroski served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division after receiving his bachelors degree from Kent State University in 1970. Prior to his election, he worked in manufacturing management for more than 25 years before becoming an intake specialist at Glenbeigh Health Services.

“I have been truly blessed, over the course of a lifetime, to have had the opportunity to serve my community, my county and my country,” Moroski said in a news release. “There can be no higher aspiration than striving to improve the lives and prospects of our residents and fellow Americans.”

Moroski said he will continue to work for Ashtabula County and its residents whenever and however he can.

“This is my home,” he said.
