Kingsville Elementary fifth-grader wins Buckeye district bee

KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — It took less than 20 minutes for Julianna Sloan to spell her way to the top Wednesday night during the Buckeye Local School District Spelling Bee.

Three students from the three eligible schools within the district competed for a spot in the county-wide spelling bee to be held Feb. 3 at the Ashtabula County Educational Services Center.

Sloan, a fifth-grader, from Kingsville Elementary School; Joshua Malasky, a sixth-grader from Braden Middle School; and, Triana Wolford, a fifth-grader from Ridgeview Elementary School, were all vying for the title of champion speller.

Traci Landis, Kingsville Elementary School principal, said before the students took the stage to compete, she gave them a little pep talk to prepare them.

“I told the students what they should be thinking about,” she said. “I told them to think about the word before they start talking and to do whatever they need to do, silently, before they start speaking. Once they start speaking, everything will be counted.”

The three judges listened closely as the three students spelled the words they were given.

It was Wolford who was disqualified first after spelling the word “derivative” incorrectly. Malasky was next to go leaving Sloan to spell one more word correctly before claiming the win.

“It feels amazing,” she said after being named the winner.

Sloan said she practiced every day with her mom and friends. Initially, she competed against 11 other students from her school to make it to the district level spelling bee.

She said she is looking forward to competing in the county spelling bee next month.

“I’m going to keep going over the list and study as hard as I can with my mom and friends,” Sloan said.
