Deerfield Apartments evacuated from flooding

GENEVA — Residents of the Deerfield Apartments on Route 20 were forced to evacuate their homes Saturday after early morning rains flooded the area.

Capt. Tom Clay, of the Geneva Fire Department, said about half of the 30 units had to evacuate.

The apartment complex, located at 4872 North Ridge E., sits lower than the road. The rain caused about a foot of water to accumulate, he said.

Residents were displaced as a precautionary measure because the utility connections were submerged since the apartments sit on a concrete slab, Clay said.

The Ashtabula County Red Cross chapter is assisting those residents who were evacuated.

Several roads were closed Saturday as well including the area near Lake and Padanarum Roads and Barnum Road.

Torrential rains caused flooding to much of the county on Thursday. Several roads were closed and a number of residents sustained damage to their property after more than 4 inches of rain fell in parts of the county.

The rain overwhelmed drainage systems, flooded streets and roads and submerged basements. Residents were busy Thursday afternoon and into the weekend cleaning up after the storms.

The rain is expected to continue over the next few days with scattered thunderstorms forecasted through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
