ADDA approves Main Avenue streetscape plan

ASHTABULA — The Ashtabula Downtown Development Association on Friday formally approved the Main Avenue streetscape improvement plan, making downtown Ashtabula more inviting and attractive.

The 31-page plan, created by landscape architect Jim McKnight and Associates of Cleveland, recommends lighting, sidewalks, facade improvements, street furniture, planting several trees and flowering plants, murals and banners. He also suggests the city improve the connection to Indian Trails Park and crosswalks at the railroad crossing.

On the positive side, McKnight said Main Avenue has existing assets, such as new asphalt, two parks, close proximity to Route 84, the Ashtabula Gulf and trails, and historic character.

McKnight also designed a streetscape for the City of Hudson, as well as areas in Cleveland.

Now that the ADDA has given its stamp of approval, it will be up to Ashtabula City Council to recognize the plan with a resolution, said Lynda Annick, president.

“Then they can apply for grants (to bring the plan to fruition),” she said.

The streetscape plan includes Main Avenue from South Park to Lance Cpl. Kevin M. Cornelius Park (the former North Park).

The community submitted ideas for the plan, Annick said.
