Ashtabula couple weds at noon on 12/12/12

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — A gentle, but chilly breeze blew through Lake Shore Park on Wednesday as the swans paddled on the water and the creek bubbled under the stone bridge.

Reginald Steele took Ashley Daubenspeck’s hand, looked into her eyes and said, “I do.”

The couple wed at noon on the 12th day of the 12th month of 2012 — the last time dates on the calendar will line up in such a manner this century.

“We have wanted to get married for awhile, but we just couldn’t seem to pick a date,” Ashley Steele said. Suddenly, 12/12/12 seemed like the right day to do it.”

The couple, who met at the Great Lakes Mall, had been dating for two years and were engaged for six months before saying their vows for officiant Sharon Bradley.

“I really never wanted a big wedding,” Ashley Steele said. “I just wanted something quiet, something just for us. This was perfect.”

Ashley Steele said that while she was excited to get married on Dec. 12, 2012, she never thought about the time.

“When (Sharon) asked me what time I wanted to get married, I said, ‘I don’t know, how about noon?’ I never thought about getting married on the 12th hour! But it just worked out.”

Bradley, of Weddings With Your View, admits to being superstitious. She said she was excited to perform a once-in-a-century wedding.

“This is just what they wanted and I am so happy for them,” she said. “I hope they have all the luck in the world.”

Ashley Steele describes her new husband as “caring, loving and funny.”

Reginald Steele said he fell in love with Ashley over a single conversation.

“I would say I was first attracted to her over that conversation, but also because she has really beautiful eyes,” he said.

The couple lives in Ashtabula, and while they have no plans to honeymoon just yet, they are excited to finally share a last name.

“We have a lot to look forward to,” Ashley Steele said.
