Rally to help Lakeside art students

ASHTABULA — Scraps of ribbon, fabric or wallpaper, half-full spray paint cans, empty toilet paper and paper towel tubes are among the items that can help Lakeside art students.

Katie Stevenson, an 8th grader at Lakeside Junior High School, is asking that these items and other art supplies be brought to the First Covenant Church, 3300 Carpenter Road, Ashtabula on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Donations can be dropped off or contributors can stay to enjoy hot dogs and lemonade at the church. There will also be games and prizes at the art drive.

“I’ve taken a huge interest in art and have realized that children are not able to reach their full potential due to the fact of not having the correct materials,” said Stevenson. “My goal is to collect enough art supplies to be distributed throughout in Ashtabula Area City Schools which will be used in all the art classes”.

At the beginning of the school year, she noticed that her fellow students did not have enough art equipment.  The teacher was buying paintbrushes for a project that they class was doing.

Suzie Kist, Stevenson’s Girl Scout leader, said “Katie saw the need and instead of complaining, she saw an opportunity to help the community and work towards her silver award. I’m very proud of her.”

Stevenson chose the art rally to work towards her Girl Scout Silver Award. For this honor, scouts must create and work on a project that benefits the local community.

To promote donations, Stevenson made a float for the Ashtabula Christmas Parade where she handed out flyers. She worked for weeks on the float, making decorations of giant paint brushes, a huge easel and a box of crayons big enough for a couple of the girl scouts to stand in.

Cory White, Lakeside Junior High art teacher, recommended items to be donated, including: copy paper, construction paper, scrapbooking paper and scraps, foil, saran wrap, paper or Styrofoam plates, paint, die cuts, stickers, blenders, pieces or whole musical instruments, colored pencils, markers, plastic Ziploc bags, hand held mirrors, muffin tins, plaster of Paris, aluminum pie tins, Q-tips, silk flowers, flour and beads, scraps of ribbon, fabric or wallpaper, half- full spray paint cans, empty toilet paper and paper towel tubes.
