Ashtabula County jobless rate highest in northeast Ohio

Although improved from a year ago, Ashtabula County’s unemployment rate remains the highest in northeast Ohio, according to civilian labor force estimates.

The rate, which is not adjusted for seasonal employment factors, stood at 8 percent in October. That was down slightly from 8.1 percent in September.

A year ago, the October rate was 9.6 percent.

During the past year, the size of the county’s labor force grew by just 300 workers while the number of residents employed at a full- or part-time work grew by 1,100.

The number of residents who were unemployed fell by 800.

Counties surrounding Ashtabula fared better in October, with Trumbull County’s 7.8 percent being the next closest to Ashtabula County’s rate.

The state’s rate, not seasonally adjusted, was 6.3 percent in October.

There were 17 Ohio counties with a rate that was higher than Ashtabula County’s. Pike County, in southern Ohio, had the highest unemployment rate, 11.5 percent.

The lowest rate, 3.8 percent, was in Mercer County, on the far western side of the state.
