Ashtabula Area City Schools BOE deems five year, 2.5 mill tax levy as necessary

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — The Ashtabula Area City Schools Board of Education Wednesday approved a resolution declaring it necessary to place a renewable levy request on the November election ballot.

The five year, 2.5-mill tax levy will pay for permanent improvements, according to the resolution.

A permanent improvement levy can only be used to construct, add to or repair buildings, build sidewalks, build parking lots and make many other such improvements to school property and assets.

Permanent improvements are generally considered to be items lasting for five years or more. Permanent improvement levies can be continuing or for a designated period of time.

The proceeds from a permanent improvement levy can not be used for the district's current operating expenses.

Superintendent Patrick Colucci said this resolution declares the need for such a levy.

The school board decided to hold a special meeting sometime next week to approve a second resolution to actually place the levy on the ballot.

If approved by voters Nov. 4, the tax would first be levied in 2014 for its first collection in 2015, according to the resolution.
