Andover man stabbed by roommate

JEFFERSON — A 45-year-old Andover man was stabbed late Sunday night at his home on Hawthorne Drive.

One of the victim’s roommates, whose name is being withheld pending charges, has been arrested.

Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to 6516 Hawthorne Drive for a reported stabbing at about 11:54 p.m. When deputies arrived, they located the victim in the yard behind the residence near the steps, according to the Sheriff’s report.

The male suspect and a female were reportedly with the victim, holding him. Both the male suspect and the female were later identified as the victim’s roommates, along with another male.

The suspect was reportedly holding a towel on the victim’s abdomen when deputies arrived.

The female roommate reportedly told deputies she was in the bathroom and heard the two arguing and then fighting. She told deputies she heard the victim tell pleading with the suspect to stop and then she could hear them “wrestling” and bumping into things, according to the report.

She reportedly told deputies when she came out of the bathroom, the suspect was standing in the kitchen. She asked where the victim was and the suspect replied, “he is outside, stabbed. Don’t tell the police,” according to the report.

The other male roommate told deputies he was in his bedroom when the stabbing occurred and did not see it.

He was alerted to it when the female roommate yelled for him that the victim had been stabbed, according to the report.

He reportedly told deputies the suspect has a drinking problem and often begins drinking from the time he wakes up in the morning, according to the report.

He told deputies when the female roommate yelled for him, he ran outside and saw the victim laying at the bottom of the steps holding his abdomen. He also said he saw the suspect walking out the front door of the residence carrying something in his hand, according to the report.

Deputies located the pocket knife as well as another knife, but neither appeared to be the weapon used, according to the report.

The suspect was arrested and transported to Ashtabula County Jail on a felonious assault charge. He has not been arraigned yet, according to court records.

The victim was transported to St. Joseph Emergency Room and promptly flown by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown due to the severity of his injuries. At the time of the report, the victim was reportedly in stable condition.
