Festive final day closes Our Lady of Peace Parish Festival

ASHTABULA —  Sunday was the final day of this year’s Our Lady of Peace Parish Festival, honoring Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

It was the 117th year of the annual weekend-long Mount Carmel festival which ran from Friday through Sunday.

Sunday’s festivities included a Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, followed by the traditional procession.

Led by the Knights of Columbus honor guard, Father Raymond Thomas and other members of Our Lady of Peace Parish clergy, the procession has also been in existence for over one hundred years.

The procession wound its way north on Columbus Avenue for about one half a mile and then retured to the church.

One parishioner, Shirley Orlando, said she has been attending the festival for more than 70 years. She remembered when the procession traveled throughout the parish from the site of the old Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church a half a mile north on Columbus Avenue.

The procession included former Ashtabula resident and parishioner Millie Tulino, 90, and other family members who traveled all the way from Washington, D.C. and Virginia.

After the procession, from noon to 4 p.m., there was a cavatelli and meatballs dinner at the parish hall.  Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church was formerly comprised of mostly Italian-American parishioners, and the dinners reflect that ethnicity.  A band played at the dinner, which was attended by well over two hundred people.

The midway opened in the early afternoon, with carnival rides, games, more live music and food vendors. Animal trainer and entertainer Jungle Terry gave a performance over the festival weekend. There was also a  $1,000 raffle.

The finale of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel festival was a gigantic fireworks display held at 11 p.m. on Sunday night.
