Mermaid brings smiles to children at state park

GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — Dozens of children gathered around Mermaid Alexis on Saturday afternoon at the Geneva State Park Beach.

“I asked for this for Christmas,” said Alexis Northrup, 20, of her full mermaid tail that she uses to swim.

The longtime lover of Arielle the Disney Princess has been swimming with her mermaid tail and recently had a fun experience with a four year old girl whose face lit up when she saw her.

“It all started at my dad’s yacht club,” Northrup said. She said the little girl thought she was a real mermaid so she was able to get in character and decided it would be a fun way to make kids happy.

After posing for pictures with young children Northrup posted them on Facebook and got connected with a page entitled “You might be a Disney addict if.”

Northrup said her postings got linked to other related Facebook pages and she received more than 13,000. She then invited children to meet her at Geneva State Park and more than 100 showed up, according to those in attendance.

Autumn Leininger, 5, of Ashtabula stopped to get her picture taken with the mermaid after hearing about the event on Facebook.

Brittany McNally of Ashtabula brought here daughter Brielle St. Angelo, 3, of Ashtabula, to the beach on Saturday morning but it took awhile to find the mermaid.

“The lifeguard directed us to her,” McNally said.

Northrup provided small nautical related items to the children. She has booked six parties and said she is charging enough money to pay her expenses for the events.

“If it is successful hopefully I can host charity events,” Northrup said.

Northrup is a fashion merchandising major at Virginia Marti in Lakewood and is a boutique manager in Strongsville. She is also a graduate of Jefferson High School.

“I have always been in love with the Little Mermaid,” Northrup said.

The mermaid tail has a functional advantage as well, Northrup said.

“It is much easier than swimming with legs,” she said.
