Hundreds spend Fourth of July at horse show

JEFFERSON —  Horse trailers surrounded the ring at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds on Friday afternoon as riders competed in 43 classes at the Runnin’ Free & Silver Stir-Ups 44th Annual Open Horse and Pony Show.

Organizers said they expected more than 400 entries in the show that started at 9 a.m. and would conclude when all 43 classes were completed, they said.

The show will be celebrating 45 years next year and is presently sponsored by the two riding clubs, said stewards Bernie Kranauer and Betty Hare.

Parents and club members spend the day at the show volunteering their time, Hare said. “It takes a lot of people to keep the show going,” she said.

The 43 judging categories have something for almost everyone ranging from a 4-year-old girl to adults in their 60s, Hare said.

Some judging categories review movements of the horse while others grade the rider, Hare said.

Kranauer said judges came from West Virginia and Pennsylvania and competitors from Pennsylvania and numerous surrounding counties in Ohio.

“This is a day just for her,” said Sarah Fabian of North Bloomfield about her daughter Lydia Fabian, 5, who was entering her very first show.

Lydia’s Aunt Carrie Morrison, also of North Bloomfield, helped the girl prepare her horse for competition.

Morrison and Sarah Fabian have the horse life in their blood. “All of our lives,” Morrison said of their participation and excitement about handing down the experience to the next generation.

Participants were treated to a relatively cool July 4 riding experience as temperatures stayed in the low 70s with a nice breeze.

Proceeds from the event go to support the activities of the two Ashtabula County riding clubs.

The show is part of a wider series of horse shows administered by the North East Ohio Horse Association.
