Two Ashtabula County men have been indicted by a Geauga County grand jury in the 2010 beating death of 17-year-old Daniel R. Swan of Thompson Township.
Dustin S. Plottke, 26, of 4259 Ireland Road, Rome Township, is charged with aggravated murder, murder, and two counts of felonious assault, according to Geauga County Common Pleas Court records.
Matthew R. Boone, 23, also of 4259 Ireland Road, Rome Township, is charged with aggravated murder, two counts of complicity to murder, two counts of felonious assault, and two counts of tampering with evidence, according to Geauga County Common Pleas Court records.
They are being held in jail at the Geauga County Safety Center, Sheriff Dan McClelland said Friday.
Both have extensive criminal records in Ashtabula County, according to Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court records.
Plottke and Boone were not acquainted Swan, a 2010 Ledgemont High School graduate, who they encountered walking along the side of the road in the early morning hours of July 25, 2010, according to news reports.
As they drove past Swan, Plottke opened the passenger door, hitting and knocking Swan down into the ditch. Boone turned the vehicle around and Plottke hit Swan in the head with a pipe-like object.
A friend later found Daniel lying in the middle of Sidley Road unconscious with a severe head injury.
Swan died a Aug. 17, 2010.
Plottke and Boone chopped up the pickup and sold it for scrap.
McClelland said it was a random crime with no motive.
Police said the case went cold until a lead developed out of burglary investigation last summer.
