U.S. Coast Guard busy with boaters in need

CONNEAUT — A 53-year-old Hubbard man was rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard Ashtabula vessel on Friday afternoon after holding on to a life jacket for 90 minutes, said Petty Office 2nd Class William Campbell.

The man was sailing, from Conneaut Harbor, with two friends and went for a swim, but was quickly disconnected from the vessel, Campbell said. He said waves were two to four feet with periods of three to five foot waves as well.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified around 3:18 p.m. and responded to the scene.

The man was found about six nautical miles north of Conneaut and was one and a half miles away from the sailboat, Campbell said. He said the people on the boat weren’t sure which direction he was and the wind pushed them apart.

“He is very lucky,” Campbell said. He said the man was treated for mild hypothermia and was returned to Conneaut Public Dock.

Campbell said the Lake City Fire Department and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft assisted in the search and rescue operation and the Conneaut Fire Department treated the man when he arrived at the dock.

Earlier in the day the U.S. Coast Guard was involved in another distress call about three nautical miles north of Conneaut when a boat partially capsized, Campbell said. He said the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the call around 11 a.m. and assisted a Good Samaritan vessel that was already helping the victims on to the boat.

Campbell said a third incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. when a boat, with seven people on board, crashed into the Ashtabula Breakwall. He said there were no reported injuries and the incident is being investigated by the Ohio Division of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft.
