Ashtabula BOE supports the renewal of a tax levy for Harbor-Topky Library

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — The Ashtabula Area City Schools Board of Education approved a resolution Wednesday declaring the necessity of and submitting to the electors of the Harbor-Topky Memorial Library District the question of the renewal of a 2.0-mill current expense tax levy.

If passed in November, the levy will provide for the current expenses of the library, 1633 Walnut Boulevard, Ashtabula.

The levy would not raise taxes.

For nearly 90 years the library and its facilities has been serving the educational and recreational needs of the Ashtabula harbor.

In other business:

• AACS Director of Operations David Boyer reported a walk-through of all the schools early last month resulted in a “punch list” for contractors to do this summer.

“It’s just odds and ends that need to be done,” he said. “I hope to have it all done before school starts in August.”

• The board approved the service agreement between Ashtabula County Technical and Career Center through the Adult Basic and Literacy Education Program (ABLE) and Ashtabula Area City Schools for the 2013-14 school year.

• Board member Alfred DeCato and President Chris Seuffert discussed the new sidewalks that will be built at the Ashtabula Lakeside Elementary Campus on Wade Avenue, come 2015. The $500,000 Safe Routes to School project is the result of a grant, written in cooperation with the city of Ashtabula, from the Ohio Department of Transportation.

“If we do a good job, second applications are accepted by ODOT,” DeCato said.

• The next school board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at Lakeside High School.
