Man struck by train in Geneva Twp.

GENEVA TOWNSHIP — A walk near the railroad tracks came to a tragic end Sunday afternoon when a 58-year-old male was struck by a train and killed.

Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office Investigator Jim Baehr said he received the call a little after noon. The incident occurred in the area of Route 20 overpass in Geneva Township.

The victim, whose identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was a 58-year-old Hispanic male, he said.

He was initially walking the right of way and sat down on one of the rails, Baehr said.

“A westbound train was approaching and blew the whistle,” he said. “He got up to move and lost his footing and fell back.”

Baehr said the preliminary ruling is an accident and he does not foresee that changing. The victim has a niece that lives in the area, but has family outside the area as well as in Mexico that still need to be notified, he said.

This is the second train vs. pedestrian accident in the Geneva area within a month. A woman was injured after being struck by a train in the city.

Baehr said alcohol appears to be a factor in Sunday’s incident. No further information was available.
