Ashtabula, Saybrook townships to see sewer rate increase

JEFFERSON — Residents in Ashtabula and Saybrook townships could soon see an increase to their sewer bills.

The City of Ashtabula is proposing a 9 percent increase of its sewer rates over a three-year period. That rate increase will affect the county’s customers in Ashtabula and Saybrook townships. The county currently has an agreement in place with the city, who supplies sewer services to the two townships.

Larry Meaney, Ashtabula County Department of Environmental Services director, said the city plans to put the rate increase into effect Aug. 1.

As an example, township customers using 4,500 gallons of water per month are currently paying $39.25. Beginning Aug. 1, their sewer bill will increase to $40.35. On July 1, 2014, the bill will increase to $41.13 and in 2015 it will increase to $41.97, Meaney said.

“Everything is based on water usage,” he said. “You control your sewer by how much water you use.”

Meaney said Ashtabula County commissioners do not have to agree to the increase; however, the city will still implement the increase and the matter will go into some kind of arbitration to allow some discussion on the increase.
