Saggy shorts thwart Ashtabula Township thief

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — An accused Ashtabula shoplifter saw his escape from the law thwarted by loose-fitting clothing late Thursday morning, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office.

A 20-year-old Woodland Avenue man who fled an Ashtabula Township store was caught by deputies when his pants literally fell down, entangling his feet, according to a report.

“(The suspect) tripped over his own saggy cargo shorts,” deputies wrote.

Deputies were dispatched to the Super Kmart store at the Ashtabula Towne Square around 11:10 a.m. after security personnel said were detaining a suspected shoplifter. Employees were talking to the suspect when deputies pulled into the parking lot, according to a report.

Seeing the approaching police, the suspect hopped on a bicycle and began pedaling away, he said. Deputies pursued, but the man ignored the cruisers’ lights and sirens and didn’t slow down.

The man gave up on the bicycle in the vicinity of the Applebee’s restaurant and began running, according to a report. After a few steps, the shorts went down — and so did the suspect, deputies said.

Store personnel told deputies they observed the man take items from the store and then conceal them, deputies said. Clothing from the store was found in a backpack carried by the suspect, deputies said. The suspect will be cited into Ashtabula Municipal Court, according to a report.
