Wayne School House replica dedicated at Antique Engine Club

WAYNE TOWNSHIP — After three years of work the remnants of the original Wayne School House are now a part of a replica built on the Antique Engine Club grounds.

“It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the dedication of our newest building,” said Janet Lipps, assistant secretary for the organization and announcer for the annual show that kicked into full gear Friday morning.

The annual Antique Engine Club gathering draws thousands of people from all over the country.

Three years ago the club raised money and planned to tow the school house from Creek Road to the Route 322 Antique Engine Club property.

“Once the crew started moving the school, it crumbled,” Lipps said.

She said she did not have high hopes for the moving project. “I’m a carpenter’s daughter. ‘I said no way!,’” Lipps said.

The club organizers didn’t let the set back get them down, instead they got back to work and raised money, volunteered time and rebuilt the building.

She said the efforts were well worth it, as the club hopes to preserve the past for the future.

“I think we are losing track of our history,” Lipps said.

The original school was built in 1854 on Creek Road on The Rufus Woodworth property, Lipps said. She said he sold the property to the township for $4.

Barbara Hamilton, Nancy Hodge, Marilyn Johnson and Evelyn Zaebst, dressed in 1850s garbs, joined LIpps in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Visitors gathered the women for pictures after Hodge and Johnson rang the school bell after the ceremony.

The Antique Engine Club show continues today and lasts until 3 p.m. Sunday, Lipps said.

A tractor parade and a variety of special events will highlight the weekend in addition to the chance to see a variety of antique engines that still run.
