Dollar General coming to Jefferson

JEFFERSON — A Dollar General Store soon will be opening in Jefferson, said Mayor Judy Maloney.

The store chain, based in Goodlettsville, Tenn., known for its low-cost items and convenient locations, is under construction at the corner of routes 307 and 46 north.

Jefferson resident Herb Housel confirmed that Dollar General Corp. purchased the property from him.

The process to obtain construction permits and get through the zoning board began in January, said Village Councilman Jerry March.

“That lot was already zoned commercial, and the only variance Dollar General received was for their signage,” March said. “Their store sign that is out by the road, is too large according to our zoning code, but because the sign will be away from the road, it is allowed.”

Another concern was the plain-box appearance of the building, but there was an architectural review, and Dollar General agreed to alter the outside design so the building will blend in with the village ambiance, March said.

“There was absolutely no opposition to Dollar General coming into Jefferson by area residents,” he said. “Not one resident came to zoning-board meetings to raise an objection.”

Jefferson Area Chamber of Commerce President Pat Bradek said any new business arriving will help the village but that people raised concerns about safety at the intersection.

“Traffic should not be a problem,” March said. “The driveway coming out onto Route 307 — people will not be able to make a left turn because of visibility issues with the hill. And there is another driveway onto Route 46, that enables drivers to see both directions,” he said.
