Jefferson meets most indicators in OAA tests

JEFFERSON —

The Jefferson Area Local School District met all but three indicators in the latest round of Ohio Achievement Assessment tests, Superintendent John Montanaro said Monday.
Montanaro discussed the test results with board of education members at Monday’s regular meeting.
The three areas the district will need to focus on include fifth grade math, fifth grade science and sixth grade math, he said.
At least 75 percent of students must pass each area to meet the indicator.
Third grade students are tested on reading and math; fourth grade students are tested on reading and math; fifth grade students are tested on reading, math and science; and, sixth grade students are tested on reading and math.
At the junior high level, seventh and eight grade students are tested on reading and math and eighth graders are also tested on science. Jefferson met all its indicators for the junior high requirements, Montanaro said.
Also discussed among board members was the recommendation to move next year’s graduation ceremony to a Friday night rather than a Sunday afternoon.
Board members agreed they will try it next year and see how it goes. The issue will come to an official vote at next month’s meeting, when an actual date and time will be established.
In other business, board members:
n Accepted the resignation of long-time school district coach, Don McCormack, citing personal reasons for his departure from his position as varsity assistant girls’ basketball coach for the 2014-2015 school year;
•  Renewed the administrative contract of Gary Pascarella, maintenance supervisor, for a two-year period, effective July 1;
•  Approved a two-year limited administrative contract for Diana Sowry as transportation supervisor at a rate of $33,000 per year, effective July 1;
•   Authorized the treasurer to pay Sowry for training days occurring June 11 through July 31 at a per diem rate;
