40th annual Harpersfield beef roast set to get under way tonight

HARPERSFIELD — One of the largest summer beef roasts in Ashtabula County is set to begin.

The annual Harpersfield Volunteer Fire Department Beef Roast attracts hundreds of visitors from around the area and beyond.

The fire department will present their 40th annual beef roast on July 18, 19 and 20. The event takes place at the fire department’s Community Recreation Center, three miles south of Interstate 90 on Cork-Cold Springs Road, just west of State Route 534. Things get under way at 5 p.m. on Friday.

The Harpersfield Beef Roast is more than a feast, it’s a festival devoted to outdoor summer fun. There’s lots of live musical entertainment, games and other diversions.

Proceeds from the event go to purchase fire department equipment. This year much of the money will go toward improvements at the new fire station and Harpersfield Township offices.

The main attraction at the festival is always the roast beef sandwiches. About 4,800 pounds of meat will be roasted over an open fire, with preparations for the event starting Thursday morning.

There will also be games for children and adults. There is no admission charge and parking is free.

Entertainment begins at 5 p.m. on Friday with local dee-jay Kinetic Agenda. At  8 p.m. the band Hatrick plays until midnight.

On Saturday food booths open at noon and the festival resumes at 5 p.m. A local polka band, The Hobos, plays upbeat, feel-good music at the beverage pavilion at 6 p.m. The Hobos have been an important part of the Harpersfield Beef Roast tradition since the beginning.

There’s country rock on Saturday with the band Wylde Ryde at 8 p.m.

On Sunday, the final day of the Beef Roast begins at noon. The Black Sheep Pipe and Drum Corps from Cleveland will present a bagpipe tribute at 4 p.m.

A new act featured at the Beef Roast is the Don Wojtila Band, a popular local polka band. They will play from 6 p.m. until the roast’s conclusion.

At 10 p.m. will be a  fireworks display commemorating the Beef Roast’s 40 years. The Harpersfield firefighters and women said they went out of their way to present a suitable fireworks tribute to the roast’s 40 years, and thank the community for their support all these years.

Joining the firefighters celebrating 40 years of the Beef Roast are the Harpersfield Fire Depart-ment Auxiliary, the Harpers-field Ruritan Club and other community members who volunteered time to help the fire department provide good food and family entertainment for the events.

Proceeds from previous festivals have been used to purchase equipment for the fire department. This year funds will go to support the continued building and operation of the Community Center and grounds.

Harpersfield Township recently purchased the water company building on Harpersfield Road for use as township offices and a new fire station. Fire department members spent the last several months working on the new building, turning it into a first-class fire station. There’s office space, a radio room, storage space, showers, a laundry room, and a kitchen in the new facility. Work still need to be done on the station,  and the Beef Roast will supply some needed money for improvements.

Harpersfield is looking for volunteers to work at food booths.

The Harpersfield fire fighters invite everyone to celebrate 40 years of beef roasts and afternoons of fun, entertainment and food.
