Reward offered in Conneaut graffiti caper

CONNEAUT — A reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest of the person responsible for a recent rash of graffiti across the city, officials said.

A resident who wants to remain anonymous has donated $500 that will be used as the reward, City Council President Nicholas Church said Thursday.

At issue is an outbreak of spray-painted scrawlings that have recently surfaced. The markings have appeared on buildings, bridges, cable television boxes and city property, Church said.

“(The culprit) is writing everywhere,” he said. “It costs the city money to take the graffiti off. The same for owners of commercial buildings.”

The so-called artist has been at work just within the past few weeks, said Police Chief Charles Burlingham. One person appears responsible for the damage, he said.

Officers have been conducting foot patrols of the city at night in hopes of catching the perpetrator, Burlingham said.

People with information should call the police department’s anonymous tip line at 593-7423.
