Hagan joins Geneva City Council

GENEVA — Susan Hagan was sworn-in as the news member of the Geneva City Council at its regular meeting Monday.

Hagan was chosenfrom seven candidates to replace Councilman Michael Keenan, who resigned after leaving the city in April. Hagan is a musician and electrician.

Many of Hagan's friends and family were present for the ceremony, including her brother Tim Hagan, who is a former Cuyahoga County commissioner.

"I'm proud and honored to be a Geneva City council member," Hagan said after the meeting. "I'm looking forward to the experience and right I'm now listening and learning and trying to do my best."

In other action City Council approved the updated Ashtabula County Multi-Jurisdictional All-Hazard Mitigation Plan. Fire Chief Doug Starkey said the plan will tie Geneva into other county-wide and national safety and hazardous mitigation resources if there is a catastrophe in the area. The plan is to be updated every five years.

A resolution to accept the bid of D.D. Mitchell Construction for Chestnut Street paving improvements was passed as well as a bid from D.B Bentley for Van Epps Avenue waterline improvements. The waterline improvements should provide better flow for residential water, and especially for fire hydrants and emergency water use.

A long awaited resolution to the 10-year-old problem of soil remediation at the former True Temper plant was made. Council voted to award a contract to Environmental Management Specialists to clean up the facility.  Assistant City Manager Jennifer Brown said quite a few bids were received from all over the state, but one from Environmental Management Specialtists was the least expensive. When the facility is cleared of any toxic materials, it will be ready for use by Arthur Louis Steel Co.

Environmental Management Specialists will be cleaning out an area 4 feet in depth from the surface at the old True Temper facility.
