Ashtabula receives $60,000 to demolish blighted houses by end of month

ASHTABULA — City Council learned Tuesday that the city will receive an additional $60,000 in Neighborhood Stabilization Funds (NSF) this month. The snag is, any demolition funded by the money must be done by Feb. 28, said Janice Switzer, program manager for the county’s department of planning and community services.

The money, originally $95,000,  came from Geauga County’s allocation of the funds, which are used to bring down dilapidated housing. Switzer said Geauga didn’t have any projects that could be done by the end of the month and they offered the money to Ashtabula County.

The county wanted to knock down two houses, she said.

Conneaut had three properties on a high-priority for demolition, but could not be presented to the board until asbestos reports were completed.

The City of Ashtabula has three blighted homes ready for demolition, so it has received $60,000 of the NSF money, City Manager Jim Timonere said.

Luciana Ratermann, the city’s director of planning, is working diligently to get everything in place by Feb. 27, he said.

City Council President J.P. Ducro IV asked the manager to give a report on all of the city’s demolished properties at the next meeting, slated for 7 p.m. March 4.
