Disc golfers enjoy lake of wind at tournament

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Disc golfers from around the state converged on Lake Shore Park for the 2013 Ashtabula Ice Bowl.

Ashtabula County Community Action and Ashtabula Catholic Charities were the real winners as the 48 disc golfers raised $517 for Community Action’s Meals on Wheels program. The Shoot the Breeze Disc Golf Club also donated 77 pounds of food, said club president Larry Jennings.

“Today we are going to play one round of 18 holes,” Jennings told  participants during a pre-tournament meeting at Ashtabula Township Park.

Winter rules are a bit different than summer rules. “In this kind of weather any park toad is not out of bounds unless you are in somebody’s yard,” Jennings said prior to the start of the tournament.

“The roof of the peacock cage is out of bounds. It has been done before,” he said.

Jennings and the golfers were surprised the winds were relatively calm for this time of year.

Travis Isenberg, an Edgewood High School graduate and winner of the North Coast Road Racing Grand Prix, started playing disc golf in college and really enjoys the sport.

“We played two times a day during the summer,” Isenberg said.

Isenberg said he enjoys the game because it is relaxing, has flexible rules and most importantly, it is cheap.

“It’s poor man’s golf. You don’t have to pay,” he said with a laugh.

Tyler Starcher, of Jefferson, said he got interested in the sport when a group of friends decided to try the game and hang out on Saturday mornings.

“I just like how nice everyone is,” he said of the players on disc golf courses. He said he is a college student at Mount Union University and he plays courses in Canton and Alliance.

The recreational division team winners, with a score of three under par, were Trevor Donehoe and Aaron Collins of Columbus and the advanced winners were Brian Henry and Kevin Cruise with a score of 10 under par.
