Car gets stuck in grass after police pursuit in Ashtabula

ASHTABULA — Police arrested two men Tuesday night after their vehicle got stuck in the grass after a short pursuit, said Chief Robert Stell of the Ashtabula Police Department.

The men, who hailed from Mentor, were involved in an incident with the Ashtabula County sheriff’s deputies earlier in the day. Consequently, the deputies alerted city police to be on the look-out for the stolen vehicle.

While on patrol, a city police officer spotted the vehicle at West 29th Street and Michigan Avenue at about 8:45 p.m., and initiated a traffic stop, Stell said.

The vehicle did not stop, but took off and police pursued the vehicle under the overpass at West Avenue, where it got stuck in the grass. At this point, the driver bailed out of the vehicle and ran a short distance before police nabbed him, Stell said.

The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested.

Stell said the entire incident was under investigation Wednesday.

The pursuit and capture occurred only a day after the driver of another vehicle crashed Monday night on the overpass after a pursuit. The occupants of that vehicle took off on foot before police could arrive and apprehend them.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol blocked the north side of the overpass while a tow truck removed the heavily damaged car around 10 p.m. Monday. Several law enforcement officers searched for the suspects, to know avail.

Anyone with any information on the suspects whereabouts, should call the police at 440-992-7172.
