West Avenue bridge work completed

ASHTABULA — One of the city’s most visible landmarks is finished with $2.3 million worth of improvements.

For months, motorists have drove around orange barrels and lane changes as workers replaced the deck on the West Avenue Bridge at West 30th Street as part of a Ohio Department of Transportation rehabilitation project.

“Only the lanes need to be painted,” City Manager Jim Timonere said at Monday night’s pre-City Council meeting.

At Timonere’s request, City Council approved an ordinance in February to enter in an agreement with ODOT for the bridge work in the amount not to exceed $457,024, as the  city’s 20 percent contribution designated by ODOT. City Council unanimously approved the manager’s request.

The money came out of the street and bridge improvements account.

“It’s actually two bridges; one goes over the railroad tracks,” he said.

In other business, Ward 2 Councilman August Pugliese wanted to know when CSX Railroad is going to fix the hole on the bridge at 32nd and Lake avenues. He also believes now is the time to cut the brush along the sides of the bridge.

“We’ve asked them and now we’re going after them for the condition of the old depot,” Timonere said. “We’ve asked them to cut the brush and weeds all the way down West 32nd Avenue.”

Pugliese said the depot is in bad shape, especially the roof.

Timonere said he will talk to CSX again about those issues.
