Garage Sale Bonanza accepting donations at Saybrook Plaza store

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Pat Graham pulls a shopping cart of random items through the cavernous storefront at the Saybrook Plaza.

A mug goes here, a picture frame goes there. She stops to take a long look at a piece of metal — it’s a candle holder and it has a place in the store, too.

Graham is a volunteer with the Garage Sale Bonanza, which is now accepting donations of garage sale items to benefit 14 local charities.

“Now is the time to clean out your basement, your attic, your closets,” sale coordinator Dick Muller said. “We are ready to accept donations for the sale.”

The sale is held at the former Big Lots building on Route 20 and the store is filled yearly with gently used furniture, toys, Christmas items, kitchen items and appliances, glassware, candles, lamps, books, children’s books, DVDs, CDs, thousands of cassette tapes, video tapes, exercise equipment and more.

Everything from microwaves to camping lanterns are donated for the sale, which is coordinated by the Wellness and Total Learning Center.

Contributors can donate garage sale leftovers, basement clean out castoffs and more at the former Big Lots store in the Saybrook Plaza on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Monday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Donations are tax deductible. Large donations and donations of furniture can be picked up by calling 319-2248.

Volunteers are also needed to help intake, clean, price and display items. Stop in at the former Big Lots store for more information on volunteering.

Charities include the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League, the Dental Task Force, Faith In Action Caregivers, Friends of Children’s Services, Girl Scout Troop 80525, Beatitude House, the Ashtabula Senior Center, RSVP Family and Community Services, Lions Club of Geneva, LIVING! with Cancer support group, Spiderweb of Jefferson and the Wellness and Total Learning Center.

The sale has become a much-anticipated event for bargain hunters, Mueller said, but antique lovers can find the best stuff in the new, larger “annex” at the former Goodwill store in the plaza, where donated collectibles and antiques are displayed for sale.

“The new annex is so much bigger now,” he said. “I think our shoppers will be very happy with it.”

The sale will be held July 12, 13 and 14, with a pre-sale ($10 entry fee) on July 10.
