New archways greet Geneva-on-the-Lake visitors

GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — Two lighted archways now greet visitors to Geneva-on-the-Lake, just in time for this weekend’s soft opening.

One archway is situated near the entrance to the Lodge and Conference Center at Geneva-on-the-Lake on Route 534, and the other archway is near Indian Creek Campground on Route 531. The project coordinator Dwayne Bennett, member of the Visitor’s Bureau Chamber Board, said the idea for the archways came about during the annual Thunder on the Strip motorcycle rally.

“We had a guy who drove straight up from Florida on a motorcycle to Thunder on the Strip, and he took a picture of his bike under the banner,” Bennett said. “He posted it on Facebook and said, ‘Drove 1,000 miles to go to Thunder on the Strip.’ I think it’s going to be iconic. It’s going to be there for a long time, and I want it to be a generational thing, like it’s been there forever.”

The arches were designed and constructed by Cicogna Sign Company, as were the way-finding signs that were installed last July. GOTL Village administrator Jim Hockaday said both projects have been planned for over a year. Hockaday said the funding for the signing projects was generated by the village bed tax.

“They’ve done very well with the bed tax and if we keep trending upward, then we can keep developing a sense of place and a sense of community here, and I think the arches will help do that,” Hockaday said. “We needed an iconic photo of Geneva-on-the-Lake to give it a sense of place, and the arches give it that.”

In addition to a sensor that will light the archways when it gets dark, the signs also feature cables just beneath the arch for hanging banners.

“They did a great job at Cicogna Signs,” Bennett said. “The owner grew up hanging out at Geneva-on-the-Lake. Without them, we probably wouldn’t have been able to do it because he gave us a really great deal. Everyone is pretty excited about them. We tried to hit every base we could and stay within the budget.”
