Commissioners to host next meeting at Geneva High School

JEFFERSON — Ashtabula County commissioners will hit the road again next week to help local students better understand the various aspects of county government.

Commissioners will host their regular agenda meeting on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Geneva High School, 1301 South Ridge Road E. The meeting will be held in the auditorium.

Residents from around the county are invited to attend as the different locations are an attempt at being more accessible to the citizens of Ashtabula County.

State Rep. John Patterson, Ashtabula County Recorder Barbara Schaab, and Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge Gary Yost will also participate in the forum and give a short presentation on their roles in local government.

Ashtabula County Commissioner Dan Claypool said the board is interested in educating local youth on the workings of local government.

“We feel that not enough time and attention are given to this,” he said. “This unique opportunity allows students and the general public to hear about what we do as public officials and to bring their concerns and issues to the commissioners through this forum.”

Claypool said the commissioners feel that by getting out into the community and into the schools, it shows both the officials and the residents that they are interested in what the youth in the community has to say.

Similar sessions outside of the county offices have been held by the commissioners since 1998, when the Ohio Revised Code was changed to allow regular meetings of the board to be held at a location in the county other than the office provided for the board in the county seat, which is Jefferson Village.

Commissioner Peggy Carlo said the board is hoping to educate local students on the inner workings of county government and bring more of the public into the governmental process on the county level.

Commissioner Joe Moroski said holding the meetings in local schools is a new initiative to include the county’s youth in the local government process.
