Beatitude House graduates 8 in Getting Ahead Program

ASHTABULA —

Eight women graduated from the “Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’ By World” program this spring at Beatitude House, and eight graduated in 2013.
The “Getting Ahead” course involves rigorous work done in a safe learning environment with the support of an experienced facilitator and co-facilitator.
While in the program, participants examine their own experience of poverty and explore issues in the community that impact poverty such as banking, housing, jobs and transportation.
The participants guide investigators through an assessment of their own resources and how to build those resources as part of their move to self-sufficiency.
Beth Hutchinson, 34, just celebrated nine months of sobriety when she moved into Beatitude House and enrolled in the “Getting Ahead” program.
Hutchinson, after completing the program, said that her life will be very different this year.
“I learned how to break down my obstacles into manageable parts, and work on them…I’ll continue to do what I’m doing now, working on my sobriety one day at a time,” she said. “That and my relationship with my children are the most important things to me.”
Seeing more success stories like Hutchinson’s is what inspired the Ashtabula County Family and Children First Council to invite community leaders to come together Wednesday for a strategic planning event, facilitated by the “Getting Ahead” course’s co-author, Philip DeVol.
Anyone interested in implementing Bridges out of Poverty on a community level is invited to attend the Bridges Steering Committee’s first meeting at noon May 7 at Henderson Memorial Public Library in Jefferson.
Beatitude House, sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, is committed to all disadvantaged women and children. By creating homes, providing educational opportunities and fostering healthy families, we provide them with the opportunity to transform their lives.
