Lakeside partners with local business leaders to prepare students for job interviews

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Lakeside High School juniors and seniors this week participated in mock interviews with  members of Ashtabula Works, a subcommittee of the Ashtabula Area City School’s Business Advisory Council.

The students prepared for the interviews by presenting well-constructed resumes, practicing interview questions in advance, watching “how-to” and “how-not-to” videos, v and dressing professionally.

Local business professionals Andy Juhola, director of Human Resources at Molded Fiber Glass, Tina Stasiewski, vice president of Business Development at Ashtabula County Medical Center, and Georgia Farris Romank from A. Louis Supply Company conducted the interviews with the students.

The event was organized by LHS teacher, Tim Ranck, who said he believes it is important for students to see and hear what an actual interview is like by actually going through the actual steps.

“For students who are turning 18, they may have their first employment this summer,” Ranck said. “I wanted them first to realize that what they put down on their application is the first impression an employer has of them.  If the application doesn't pass the test, they'll never have the face-to-face interview.”

Members in the audience were given sample applications of each actor/interviewee prior to the interviews taking place. Next, students watched several classmates  being interviewed.

“I prepared several students so the audience could see a great interview versus one that was less than adequate,” Ranck said. “The mock interviews demonstrated things like being focused, engaged and prepared leaves a great impression, whereas checking your phone during an interview, does not.”
