Walnut Beach will have a concession stand this year

ASHTABULA —

If you can't shake the dreary winter blues, start making plans to visit the Walnut Beach this summer.
City Council awarded a three-year contract Monday night for a North Kingsville businessman to run the concession stand at Walnut Beach.
Conneaut resident, Timothy Foster, who owns the pool supply store on Route 193, near Covered Bridge Pizza, is going to operate the stand. He has a vending machine company and ran the concession stand at Lake Shore Park for a few years, City Manager Jim Timonere said.
"He has good ideas and some exciting plans for Walnut Beach," Timonere said. "I am happy it will be occupied this year."
Timonere said the city received three applicants but he wanted to give it to a local person.
Ward 2 Councilman August Pugliese said he was pleased with the decision.
"A lot of people use the concession stand, especially in the morning," he said. "I hope it's like it was a few years ago."
City Council also approved an ordinance to enter into an agreement with the Ashtabula County YMCA for lifeguards at Walnut Beach for an amount not to exceed $21,600.
The lifeguards will be on duty Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. The concession stand is traditionally open the same.
In other business, City Council:
• Approved an agreement with Medico Systems of Jefferson for asbestos abatement and demolition of a blighted structure at 3707 West Ave. for an amount not to exceed $14,820.
• Passed an ordinance changing the zoning of both sides of Lake Avenue between Walnut Boulevard and West 19th Street to C-1, general commercial district and making special provisions for properties in the H-1, historic district affected by this change.
• Passed an ordinance authorizing the city manager to enter into an agreement with Union Industrial Contractors to make $25,000 in emergency repairs to Mattson Drive.
"A storm drain collapsed and the catch basins need rebuilt," Timonere said, noting the job is expected to be completed in three to four weeks.
• Passed an ordinance creating a new position of animal control officer/code enforcement office. When looking at the position, Timonere said he believed the employee who took this job could do exterior code enforcement work when he or she wasn't doing animal control duties.
