Deputy stabbed while on duty

JEFFERSON —

An Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department deputy is recovering after being stabbed early Sunday morning while on duty.
Deputies were called to Wal-Mart, in Ashtabula Township, at about midnight for a report of a suspicious male inside the store. The suspect was reportedly  had a kitchen knife, with a 12-inch blade, was covered in duct tape and walking around the store talking to himself and acting very strangely, said Ashtabula County Sheriff William Johnson.
While deputies were en route, Wal-Mart employees called back and advised the suspect had gone outside by the food entrance and was jumping on the concrete poles and becoming violent. He was reportedly displaying turbulent behavior and screaming and yelling, Johnson said.
Deputy Scott Davis arrived on the scene and encountered the suspect. The suspect pulled the knife out of his pocket and began fighting with Davis, stabbing him in the hand, Johnson said.
As Davis was trying to secure the suspect, he continued to resist arrest. Davis eventually got the knife away from the suspect and it fell to the ground.
As Davis was wrestling with the suspect on the ground, a witness, Levi Larrison, assisted him by kicking the knife away from the suspect, Johnson said.
Ashtabula City Police arrived on scene to assist and the suspect was secured.
Davis suffered a stab wound to his hand and several cuts and abrasions to his elbows, hands and knees, Johnson said.
The suspect was transported to the Ashtabula County Jail for the weekend pending arraignment. He was also transported to the Ashtabula County Medical Center for an evaluation, he said.
"We do this job and we understand how volatile it can be," Johnson said. "You have to be prepared for anything."
Johnson said luckily in this case everything turned out OK, but it could have been a lot worse.
"There could have been a fatality, or even two," he said.
Davis will be off work while he recovers from his injury. Johnson said it's unknown how long before he will be back on duty.
