Ashtabula County Nursing Home residents get treat from A-Tech students

KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — Thirteen ladies were all smiles Tuesday afternoon at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home as they received some special nail treatment from visiting A-Tech students.

“This is the first time to have them come here,” said Ashtabula County Nursing Home Activities Director Trisha Lute. She said the school called offering their services and the nursing home was excited to have them come.

“The ladies love to go to the beauty shop and get their hair done. Just because they are older doesn’t mean they don’t like to look nice,” Lute said.

Heidi Nelling, a substitute teacher for the adult cosmetology and nail department at A-Tech, supervised a group of six students that offered the free service to the woman.

“It helps them (the students) interact because right now they are just working on each other,” Nelling said of the adult students that must get 200 hours of time working on nails to get their accreditation.

“We are always inviting groups or organizations that want to come out and help. This is our county home,” she said of the positive impact volunteers can have.

“It is a good way to give back,” Nelling said.

Cindy Hall, an adult student, said she decided to start working on nails because she had a lot of friends and family that can’t take care of themselves so she decided to get a degree to help people.

She said her normal job does not have a lot of interaction with people.

“This is right up my alley,” she said of the nail work.

Betty Shears, a resident at the county home, said she decided to see what the students would do to make her nails look nice.

“We are going to spiff up your nails,” Hall said.

“I needed my nails done and I wanted to see what they do now,” said Janet Guth who worked in the beauty shop industry in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
