Weekend shirtsleeves replaced by frigid temps

Folks who spent a Sunday in shirtsleeves gathering leaves could be swapping rakes for snow shovels if today’s weather forecast holds true.

The National Weather Service is calling for snow showers today, which could bring the area’s official introduction to the 2012-2013 winter season. No more than an inch of the white stuff is expected, however.

High temperatures won’t climb but a few degrees above freezing, according to the NWS. Reach for another blanket tonight, because the low will dip into the 20s.

Mother Nature displayed her cruel sense of humor Monday, following up a beautiful Sunday — sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s — with a day of wind gusts and heavy rain. Much of northeast Ohio was under a high wind advisory on Monday.

Those gusts were a big part of the power outages that bedeviled dozens of Ashtabula County residents on Monday. The Illuminating Co. reported more than 100 outages in the county by mid-afternoon Monday, including spots in Conneaut; Ashtabula; Jefferson; and Monroe, Kingsville, Denmark, Trumbull, Austinburg and New Lyme townships, according to a website operated by First Energy, the utility’s parent company.

More than 4,000 outages were reported across the Illuminating Co.’s service area on Monday afternoon, according to the website.

Snow was a rarity in November 2011, according to NWS records. Last year, the Cleveland district (which includes Ashtabula County), saw only two days with snow and four days of light snow which didn’t amount to more than 1.1 inches.
