Spire Institute and Cristal form partnership

Sports complex makes first naming-rights deal

HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP — A community collaboration was announced Tuesday afternoon highlighting the partnership between Cristal USA and Spire Institute.

The basketball and volleyball portion of the Spire Institute complex was named “The Cristal Courts” during a press conference with more than 50 people in attendance.

“Spire is very proud to partner with Cristal Global,” said Spire Institute Founder Ron Clutter.

The financial details of the naming agreement were not made public, but several signs detailing the Cristal logo were prominently displayed.

“It’s all to be determined,” said Scott Strayer, site director of the Cristal Ashtabula complex. He said the company was impressed with Spire Institute’s commitment to excellence and wanted to become involved in supporting a local group doing such good work.

“We’ve probably been a little quiet in the community,” Strayer said.

This is the first naming-rights deal to be implemented at Spire Institute, according to a joint press released by Cristal USA and Spire Institute.

Strayer said the company was also excited about working out an arrangement so employees will be provided benefits at the fitness, swimming and eating facilities at Spire Institute.

“We see a lot of value for our employees,” Strayer said.

Spire Institute integrates sports and education, training and wellness at the 750,000-square-foot facility. It has also recently been designated as an official Olympic training site.

Cristal family of companies is the second largest producer of titanium dioxide and a leading producer of titanium chemicals.  The Ashtabula complex includes two plants in Ashtabula Township.

Eight hundred of the company’s 4,000 employees (world-wide) work at the Ashtabula Complex.
