Conneaut parish to get a new name

St. Mary/St. Frances Cabrini members will choose

CONNEAUT — St. Mary/St. Frances Cabrini Parish could have a new name, chosen by the congregation, by summer’s end.

Worshippers at the two churches that comprise the parish will suggest names and then whittle down the nominees with a series of votes that will extend over several weeks. Church members must submit ideas no later than April 1 to the parish office. Six ballots spread over 12 weeks (the first to be held April 14) will pare down the field. With each vote, names will be eliminated and a new ballot prepared, according to information prepared by the parish.

Parishioners’ ultimate choice will be given to The Most Rev. George Murry, bishop of the diocese of Youngstown, for final approval.

The Rev. Philip Miller, pastor at the two Conneaut churches, said some parishes within the diocese — when they merge or consolidate — decide to choose a new name. “It helps foster unity,” he said.

Even though the parish will have a new title, St. Mary and St. Frances Cabrini churches will keep their names and remain open, Miller emphasized. “At this time there are no plans or any talk about closing a church,” he said.

The St. Mary and St. Frances Cabrini parishes were blended several years ago. St. Mary, at the corner of Chestnut and State streets, opened in 1888, while Cabrini was constructed in 1954 on Mill Street.
