CONNEAUT —  A 16-year-old boy reportedly lit up a marijuana cigarette while riding a Conneaut school bus Tuesday morning, police said.

The boy was reportedly en route to A-Tech in Jefferson Township when the driver became aware of the alleged drug use around 8 a.m., said Police Chief Charles Burlingham. The bus was on Route 11 at the time, Burlingham said. Since the incident took place beyond Conneaut city limits, outside of local department’s jurisdiction, city police cannot investigate, he said. It was not immediately known Wednesday if the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office is involved in the case.

Conneaut police were notified of the incident around 3:19 p.m. Tuesday, Burlingham said.

Administrators at Conneaut High School are investigating the report, Principal Dawn Zappitelli said in an e-mail message.
