Yost announces re-election bid

JEFFERSON — Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court Judge Gary Yost has announced intentions to seek re-election in 2014.

“I believe my experience will provide an important measure of stability in a time of significant transition for our common pleas court,” Yost said in a statement released Tuesday.

Yost’s position is one of five county judgeships up for grabs next year. All three common pleas seats will be available, along with the probate/juvenile court position. Three incumbents — Ronald Vettel and Alfred Mackey of Common Pleas and Charles Hague of the probate/juvenile courts — cannot seek re-election because the Ohio Constitution prohibits election of judges after they reach 70 years of age. In addition, David Schroeder, appointed to the bench of the Western County Court this past spring, could run to fill the rest of the term next year.

Eastern County Court Judge Robert Wynn won re-election last year.

In addition to the judge positions, voters in November 2014 will also decide three other county positions. Seats held by Commissioner Joe Moroski and Auditor Roger Corlett are at stake. Also, the county prosecutor eventually picked to replace Thomas Sartini must run for the unexpired portion of the term next fall. Sartini is scheduled to retire at the end of this month.

Yost has served as common pleas court judge for 23 years. Previously, he was Eastern County Court judge, assistant county prosecutor, assistant Ashtabula City solicitor and a staff attorney for the Ashtabula County Legal Aid officer, according to his statement. He also had a private law practice.

Yost and his wife, Bonnie, live in Jefferson.
