Cold blows into Ashtabula County again

Many area schools call off or delay classes

A series of clipper systems continues to reinforce bitterly cold air over northeast Ohio, giving many Ashtabula County students another day off, or at the very least, a few extra hours to sleep in.

With the exception of Grand Valley, schools called off classes again Friday, while Conneaut, Buckeye and Christian Faith Academy were on a two-hour delay.

The freezing temperatures caused trouble for Aqua Ohio at a water main by the Office Max store on Route 20 in Ashtabula Township. Workers were called to fix the damage early Friday.

The National Weather Service recorded a little more than 3 inches of snow in Cleveland, exceeding predictions of 1-2 inches on Thursday. Jefferson got about 2 inches, while in Chardon, the belt buckle of the snow belt, nearly 7 inches of snow fell in 24 hours, according to the NWS.

The thermometer rose to 19 degrees Friday, but the wind picked up, making it feel like -13 at times.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 tonight. Significant snowfall is expected on the ground today with more snow likely on Sunday, and a predicted high of 23 degrees.

Ashtabula County residents should enjoy the warmth because by Monday, the high will only be 10 degrees, and the low predicted to be -4, according to the NWS.

Anyone going outdoors should wear hats and gloves in additon to a coat to protect from potential hypthermia and frost bite. People also are reminded to bring their pets in  from outdoors in this weather.
