Road race will benefit N.K. woodland project

NORTH KINGSVILLE — A 5K race and 1-mile run/walk to benefit the North Kingsville Wetlands and Woodlands Preservation project will be held Saturday morning in the village.

The starting line is the North Kingsville Presbyterian Church 6546 Church St., which sits a short distance from the woods.

Cost is $25 and registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The 5K portion starts at 8 a.m., followed by the 1-mile run/walk at 8:15 a.m.

Proceeds will assist the efforts of a group of village residents who this spring acquired a 24-acre parcel of beloved woods that had been threatened with lumbering activity.

Money will be used to maintain a trail in the preserve and help pay loans the group took out to purchase the property.

Race/walk participants will take home a special piece of the woodlands, said Beverly Santee, a spokeswoman. Medallions were fashioned from a cherry tree that had split and threatened the path, she said. People will also be provided water and bananas, Santee said.

The final leg of Saturday’s event takes runners and walkers through the woods.

Volunteers have been busy clearing the woodlands path of obstacles in preparation for the event, Santee said.

Refinements to the walking path continue, Santee said. Recently, members erected a sign stating some simple rules for visitors, she said.

Next year, a footbridge over a small stream will be constructed, thanks to donations.

Sponsors of Saturday’s race/walk include North Kingsville Presbyterian Church, Furniture Towne, Ducro Funeral Services, Santee Racing, Ringer Screen Print, All-Pro Transport Inc., Peet Roofing, CBC Construc-tion, Kelly Summers Photography, Giant Eagle, Here’s Your Sign, Copy World, the North Kingsville Fire Depart-ment and the Zezzo family.
