UH kicks off health series on Saturday

University Hospitals facilities in Conneaut and in Ashtabula County will participate in the first annual Family Health and Safety Days this summer.

The event will be held on three different Saturdays at three different locations starting this weekend, according to a statement. Screenings, assessments, educational and creative activities will be featured at each location.

“We are offering Family Health and Safety Days in Ashtabula County to encourage every aspect of wellness — physical, mental, social and economic,” said M. Steven Jones, president of UH Conneaut and Geneva medical centers. “Everyone in our region, including those underserved because of economic factors, can benefit from the free services and information accessible at these events.”

Here’s the schedule:

• June 28 — 11 a.m.-2 p.m., UH Geneva Medical Center, 870 W. Main St. (Route 20), Geneva

• July 19 — 11 a.m.-2 p.m., UH Conneut Medical Center, 158 W. Main Road (Route 20), Conneaut

• Aug. 2 — 11 a.m.-2 p.m., UH Ashtabula Health Center, 2131 Lake Ave., Ashtabula

A variety of walk-up screenings and assessments will be available at each location, including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, body mass index, bone density, hearing, balance/grip and sleep disorders (adults and children). Screenings for lower extremity vascular and foot assessments and sport physicals will require reservations.

Other activities will include water/fire safety talks, LifeFlight helicopter, ambulance and fire engine education, “My Plate” cooking demonstration and bicycle safety instruction, including free helmets for kids while supplies last. Officials from the Ashtabula County Health Department will be on hand to answer questions and the Lake County General Health District will help with health insurance sign-ups.

Not all screenings will be available on all dates. Each UH clinical team will also facilitate scheduling appointments for mammograms, colonoscopies and smokeless classes.
