Conneaut will host Arbor Day ceremony

CONNEAUT — Conneaut’s annual Arbor Day ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Malek Park on Parrish Road.

The observance, which starts at the picnic pavilion near the Dorothy Shumake Arboretum, coincides with Conneaut’s designation as a Tree City USA for 30 consecutive years.

Council President Nic Church will present a proclamation and this year’s memorial plantings will be announced. Also, Rod Raker, chairman of the city’s Tree Commission, will thank benefactors to the arboretum and share recent commission news, including the recent donation of 14 acres to the park by the Anderson family.

Raker will also discuss the damage that can be inflicted by the emerald ash borer and talk about common tree maintenance problems, such as improper pruning, weed trimmer damage and tree fertilizers. Other topics include the future of the arboretum, other pending land donations and partnerships that could be established with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Holden Arboretum.

Here’s a list of this year’s memorial plantings. The name of the honoree is listed first, followed by the contributor in parenthesis:

Anthony J. Liocano (Bonita and Richard Kiser); Braden, Hicks and Whiting families (family members); Evelyn Froelicher, Louise Smith and Mary Adams (North Kingsville Garden Club); Melanie “Lanie” Powell (Natasha and David Roosa, families and friends); present and past residents of the Ardis Kremer Home (Kremer Home); Ciarra Rhodes (Gramma Rhodes); N. Keith and Miriam Anderson (the Anderson family); John and Thelma Szalai (Gary and Pamela Anderson); Ed and Dorothy Malek (the Anderson family); the Anderson family (Rod Raker); Hank and Anne Ogrodnichek (the Ogrodnichek family); and Bluestone Perennials (Bill Boonstra and family).
