Area organizations to host Senior ‘Senior’ Prom

ASHTABULA — Ashtabula County area senior centers and local business will host the 10th annual Ashtabula County Senior “Senior’ Prom on June 17 at Saybrook Banquet Centre located at 3116 North Bend Road. This year’s theme will be “Fire and Ice.”

Who doesn’t love an evening of festivities, dancing and fun? The prom as we know it began in 19th Century America as a simple banquet held for graduating university students. As teen culture took root in the 1940s and 1950s, proms were centered on American high schools. It was the 1950s that saw proms increasingly held at hotels and country clubs, as the postwar economy recovered. The prom even made it to the White House in 1975, under President Ford (and his daughter Susan). It’s June: time for tuxedos and boutonnieres, corsages and prom dresses — and high scholars’ aren’t the only ones having prom night this month.

The prom for senior citizens is a chance to celebrate. From dinner to dancing, from the festive attire to the fanciful decorations, is a chance to get out, enjoy a fabulous meal, dance a little and have an evening of fun. There will even be a a coronation for the prom king and queen — complete with crowns and other regalia.

Lisa Bruckman from the Ashatbula Senior Center, Toni Tulajew from the Jefferson Senior Center, Karen Farrow from Continuum Home Care, Brenda MacNaughton from Carington Park Nursing & Rehab, Karen DeGeorge from Personal Home Health Care, Carissa Allen from Saybrook Landing, Christine Britton from RSVP, Julie Hunt from Country Club Retirement Center, Mariana Branch from Kingsville Public Library, Stacy Penhollow from Great Lakes Caring and Judy Witt have been planning the event for weeks.

Saybrook Banquet Center Catering Service will provide the dinner and          Kevin McGinnis of KMcGPhotography, "Photos On The Fly" will be taking pictures to remember the beautiful evening. Entertainment will be provided by Dennis Ford accompanied by Mrs. Ford on the keyboard sponsored by Ashtabula County Medical Center and Ku The Fire Dancer will perform a fire dance sponsored by PJ Macchia from The Cove Night Club and Yankee’s Bar and Grill.

Proper attire is required, however in the past the attire ranged from your “Sunday’s best to formals, including corsages and tiaras.  Just come and have fun.  Enjoy a good meal, good music and a good time.
