Milestone moments recorded forever

Graduation day is finally here! The seniors pose for yearbook photos. They share selfie pictures on social media. These milestone moments of their accomplishments are recorded forever.

Soon the celebrations of open houses and graduation parties will begin. It is the same every year all across the country, students, parents, friends and relatives want to share in the fun.

It is important at the same time to remember to keep everyone safe.

The Drug Free Action Alliance (www.drugfreeactionalliance.org) has been working steadily to educate parents and students about the dangers of underage drinking.

Their public awareness program: Parents who host lose the most.

Don’t be a party to underage drinking has proven to be effective. Today, the research statistics are showing a decline in underage drinking.

This doesn’t mean that parents and communities should feel that the work to reduce underage drinking is done.

The health and safety risks regarding alcohol at teen/family parties is still dangerous.

Parents or other adults who host a party for a group of teens or anyone under the age of 21, must still follow the law when it comes to serving alcohol.

Every year there are reports from all areas of Ashtabula County of teen parties that the sheriff’s department or city police have to break up.

Teens are cited into court and if adults are present, they also will receive a court summons.

Allowing underage drinking on your property can get a homeowner into hot water.

Sadly, there are also cases where an accident occurs after a celebration. It could be a car accident involving teens who have been drinking.

It could also be an accident the results from someone taking a risk that they wouldn’t take when they were sober.

Emergency rooms all over the country share statistics on tragic daredevil stunts by teens who were under the influence.

If you are hosting or attending celebrations for graduates this summer, please put don’t allow underage drinking.

Protect yourself from prosecution and your child and his friends from danger. It only takes a second for the wrong judgment, slow reflex, or risky behavior to happen.

Everyone’s life will be changed forever.

Be sure to check with other parents about their plans for parties and celebrations.

Ask if alcohol is going to be served.

Talk to your children about the law, the dangers of alcohol and the consequences.

Remind your children of your family values and always encourage your child to call home for a ride if there is a problem at a party or event.

Keeping our children safe is our first priority as parents and as a community.

So do your part to keep the celebrations safe and joyful.

Remember education and prevention are keys to keeping our children safe and drug-free.
