Multi-vehicle pile-up closes I-90 east for hours

PAINESVILLE — As many as 40 vehicles were involved in a multi-vehicle crash, Tuesday, that closed I-90 eastbound for several hours.

Motorists were stranded, east of Vrooman Road, for about an 11-mile stretchmore than three hours as crews worked to clean-up the crash.

A dispatcher from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Chardon Post said all units were on scene working as quickly as possible to get the interstate re-opened.

All eastbound lanes were closed from 11:04, when the incident occurred, the dispatcher said.

The dispatcher advised there were some injuries and a few people were taken to hospitals; however, none were believed to be seriously injured.

Initial reports indicate the crashes began with a large pileup, followed by more collisions behind it, said Capt. Carl Dondorfer of the Lake County sheriff’s office.

Drivers were told to expect long delays on I-90 eastbound between mile markers 201 and 208. Drivers were asked to exit at Route 44 northbound to Route 2/US 20, according to reports.

Authorities said the weather was likely a factor in the crash and cautioned motorists to remain extremely alert while traveling on the treacherous road conditions.

According to new reports, some vehicles stuck in the eastbound back-up were turning around and driving west in the eastbound lanes.

A lake effect snow advisory remained in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday.
