Officer recognized for saving boy’s life

ASHTABULA — An Ashtabula police officer was recognized at Monday night’s City Council meeting for saving the life of a 4-year-old boy.

Police Chief Robert Stell and Lt. Will Parkomaki recognized Patrolman Thomas Clemens Jr. for “going above and beyond the call of duty,” Stell said.

On Oct. 13, while on patrol, Clemens saw the parents of Anthony Aruta frantically waving at him from their treelawn on Bunker Hill Road.

When he stopped, the boy was in distress and unresponsive, Parkomaki said.

The officer started CPR until paramedics arrived.

Clemens was presented the award for his “meritorious service,” Parkomaki said.

The audience, which included all of City Council, City Manager Jim Timonere and Clemens’ family, gave the patrolman a standing ovation.

A benefit dinner for Anthony, who remains at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital will be held from 2-6 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion, 1804 W. 19th St., Ashtabula.

A rigatoni dinner will be served. $10; children ages 5 and younger free. Carry-out available. Tickets at door or at Kardohely’s Restaurant. Call Jackie Perez at 994-4114 or Kari McKinley at 813-5245. Money will be used to help family with medical bills and travel expenses.

The boy suffered complications from a tonsillectomy.
