A quarrel over a girlfriend resulted in an assault and robbery early Tuesday morning on Center Street.
An 18-year-old Ashtabula man said he was jumped by four men at about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday in the vicinity of Kenray Battery, 825 Center St., according to an Ashtabula Police Department report.
"He knew the men," Chief Robert Stell said. "They had a problem with him over a girlfriend."
The assailants beat the man, according to the police report.
One of the men struck him in the face with a handgun and another tried to break his thumb, Stell said.
The four suspects took the victim's cell phone before fleeing the area, the report said.
The victim was transported to Ashtabula County Medical Center, where he was treated and later released.
Stell said the report of the altercation has been turned over the detective bureau for investigation.
